The Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO) will begin labour action in public schools across Ontario on May 11, 2015. We know that, as parents, it is important for you to know how this situation may affect your child, so I'm writing to provide you with an update. Although we have not had final confirmation from provincial ETFO, the following is our understanding:
All Peel District School Board elementary schools (kindergarten to grade 8) will be OPEN to students next week.
May 11 remains a Professional Activity Day so students should not come to school on Monday, but should attend the rest of the week.
We believe that, beginning May 11, provincial ETFO will direct all elementary teachers to "work-to-rule" on administrative issues. As such, there will likely be limited impact on students. Under this direction, planned teacher action across the province may include:
- not performing duties related to EQAO
not filling in for administrators when asked
not participating in professional development related to Ministry of Education initiatives
not preparing report card comments
Before- and after-school programs and busing will continue, and we do not, at this point, expect the cancellation of field trips or other extracurricular activities.
Our priority remains the safety of our students and we want you to clearly understand the status of our schools during any labour action. We will confirm exact details as soon as we have confirmation from provincial ETFO. To find out the status of job action this weekend:
We are committed to keeping you informed and will continue to monitor the situation and its impact on elementary students. As a board, we respect our elementary teachers and value their work with students. We remain committed to reaching fair, negotiated agreements with all of our employee groups. Thank you for your patience, support and understanding.
Chair, Peel District School Board
