Peel District School Board students will participate in a variety of activities and events as part of Asian Heritage Month this May. These activities, which range from martial arts demonstrations to traditional folk dancing, will recognize and reflect on Asian culture and the many contributions of Asian Canadians.
“Our schools are committed to celebrating all communities and cultures throughout the year,” says Tony Pontes, director of education. “Asian Heritage Month allows students to learn about the rich culture and traditions of the Asian community, celebrate the achievements of Asian Canadians, and grow as individuals and leaders."
In Mississauga, Meadowvale Village Public School will host the Menaka Thakkar Dance Company on May 6. Menaka Thakkar is a classical Indian dance performer and choreographer.
At Balmoral Drive Senior Public School in Brampton, students will participate in activities such as henna art, taekwando and traditional Indian folk dances.
In Caledon, Alloa Public School will host Bernice Hune, a storyteller who will conduct three sessions about the Kite Festival of Spring, the ancient silk trade route and the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
Asian Heritage artwork from students across the Peel board is on display in the atrium at the HJA Brown Education Centre located at 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga. Meadowvale Village Public School is located at 890 Old Derry Rd. W. in Mississauga. Balmoral Drive Senior Public School is located at 233 Balmoral Dr. in Brampton. Alloa Public School is located at 1248 Mayfield Rd. W. in Caledon.
