Peel board parents and staff invited to information night on student stress, ‘Finding CALM in Class and at Home: A Journey of Mindfulness’

As part of Children’s Mental Health Week, Peel District School Board social workers, in partnership with Peel Children’s Centre, will host an information night for Peel parents and staff to increase awareness about student stress and provide advice on how to help them cope. The event begins at 6 p.m. on Monday, May 4 at the HJA Brown Education Centre in Mississauga.

“By learning strategies and using board resources aimed at promoting good mental health, parents and teachers can become mindful, understanding mentors,” says Jim Van Buskirk, chief social worker at the Peel board. “We want to help children cope in the face of adversity and emphasize that good mental health begins with mindfulness.”
From 6 to 6:30 p.m. participants will have an opportunity to meet with a variety of mental health service providers at the community resource fair. At 6:30 p.m., Kimberly Brawley, social worker at the Peel Children’s Centre and Gordon Brill, teacher at the Peel board, will present on how mindfulness can support both teaching and parenting.

Parents can register for the event at www.peelschools.org/staff/conferences/Pages/default.aspx. The HJA Brown Education Centre is located at 5650 Hurontario Street in Mississauga.
