Free conference provides practical ways parents can help boost achievement in all subject areas
More than 1,200 Peel District School Board parents from schools in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will become students for a day at the 14th annual parent conference on April 18. Amy Lin will keynote Numeracy and Beyond and share how approaches to teaching math in the classroom have changed over time and the importance of promoting a growth mindset. Lin is a PhD candidate in math education and co-director of a global education social enterprise. Participants will also choose from more than 60 workshops designed to provide parents with tips and resources to help their children succeed in school.
"As part of the Peel board's EngageMath three-year comprehensive numeracy strategy, this year's parent conference focuses on helping parents boost their children's numeracy success—25 of the 60 workshops offered focus on math," says Tony Pontes, director of education. "The conference also provides support in all other subject areas. Whether your child is starting kindergarten, needs support developing study skills in middle school or is considering post-secondary opportunities, the conference supports parents' learning needs."
All of the workshops offered are facilitated by Peel board staff. Tip sheets will be provided at each workshop and will be available after the conference on the board's website. Workshops include:
During breaks, parents can visit booths set up in the exhibitor area, which includes various local non-profit organizations and companies showcasing their products and services. Parents will also receive a conference bag with giveaways, enjoy a free lunch and have a chance to win door prizes.
