More than 750 grade 11 students enrolled in Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) programs will attend the Peel District School Board's third SHSM student conference on April 15, 16 or 17. Guest speaker Sean Aiken, author of The One-Week Job Project, will share his 52 jobs in 52 weeks experience with students and encourage them to pursue their passions. Students will also participate in one of ten certification and training sessions, and earn certificates upon completing the training.
"The conference allows students to earn sector-recognized certifications to prepare them for all post-secondary pathways—apprenticeship, college, community living, university and the workplace," says Carol Speers, superintendent of alternative programs. "Based on the success of the SHSM student conference over the past two years, it's important that we continue to provide students with valuable experiences to ensure they achieve continued success after high school."
SHSM is a ministry-approved program that allows students to focus their learning on a specific area of interest. Students in grades 11 and 12 can enrol in an SHSM program. The following SHSM sectors are available at Peel secondary schools:
- Arts and Culture
- Health and Wellness
- Hospitality and Tourism
- Information and Communications Technology
- Justice, Community Safety and Emergency Services
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. each day at the Mississauga Grand Banquet Centre, located at 35 Brunel Rd. in Mississauga.
