Judi Powell, guidance counsellor at Rick Hansen Secondary School, is the 2015 recipient of the Helen Des Roches Starfish Award. She will be honoured at an award ceremony at Rick Hansen on March 3 during Social Work Week.
"Judi is a deserving recipient who is not only a superior professional, mentor, teacher and colleague, but also an outstanding philanthropist," says Jim Van Buskirk, chief social worker with the Peel District School Board. "The award recognizes Judi's dedication and commitment to the well-being of students, to developing student leadership and to student success for the greater good of the school community."
Powell's career at Rick Hansen has been distinguished by her commitment to promoting the welfare of all students and her dedication to the widespread growth of the school community.
The Helen Des Roches Starfish Award is presented annually to an individual who has made a significant difference in the lives of students facing obstacles to their education. The Peel board social workers nominate individuals who are current employees or affiliates with the board. A committee of three school social workers review the nominations and select the recipient.
The award ceremony begins at 8:45 a.m. on March 3 at Rick Hansen, located at 1150 Dream Crest Rd. in Mississauga.
