What is Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS)?
Literacy and Basic Skills are the foundation for successful daily interactions. This program helps English-speaking adults function more effectively, prepares them for skills training or high school, and improves their overall employability. The learners develop essential skills in:
- reading text
- document use
- writing
- numeracy
- oral communication
- thinking
- working with others
- computer use
- continuous learning
Classes are for English-speaking adults:
- over the age of 19, or
- over the age of 18 and out of school for one year
and
- whose listening/speaking skills have been measured as a Level 6, based on the
- Canadian Language Benchmark Assessment.
Do you receive a credit for LBS course work?
No.
This is a non-credit program that will provide English-speaking adult learners with the basic literacy skills to study the courses necessary to complete their required high school credits or to prepare them for skills training.

Mississauga
Monday to Thursday:
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Monday and Wednesday:
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Brampton
Monday to Thursday:
9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Monday and Wednesday:
6:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Do I have to attend all day?
Classes are offered both full and part-time. You can discuss the best times for you with the assessor.
How much do the courses cost?
There is no cost to attend the LBS program.
Where can I park?
Parking is free at all Adult Education Centre Campus Sites.
Do you provide babysitting?
Unfortunately, we do not offer babysitting programs at any of our sites at this time.
