In 2017-18, the Peel District School Board grew in many innovative and exciting ways. We welcomed a new director of education, grew to over 155,000 students, and opened two new schools. Together, staff, students, families and community members made progress in all goal areas of our strategic Plan for Student Success to inspire success, confidence and success in each student.

The board entered year four of its comprehensive numeracy strategy, EngageMath, to continue to improve numeracy instruction in Peel classrooms. Below are some highlights:
Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) test scores at Peel schools continue to remain in line with the province in most areas. Grade 10 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) scores were above the provincial average. Over the last five years, the Peel board's EQAO scores show a steady increase in reading and writing for grade 6 students, and a seven per cent increase in reading for grade 6 students with special education needs.

The board committed $1.4 million to redesign and build outdoor learning spaces in the upcoming years.
In 2017-18, 103 Peel schools received Ontario EcoSchools certifications for their environmental achievements
The board approved the first skilled trades program of its kind in the Peel region, Regional Skilled Trades. The program will open in September 2019 at West Credit Secondary School.

The board launched two new ways to engage and share information with the Peel community:
Over 1,000 parents attended the board's first Empowering Modern Learners Parent Conference. At this event, families gained resources and knowledge on modern learning to support their child. The conference was free with the support from Peel Elementary Teachers' Local, Parent Involvement Committee and Peel Principals' and Vice Principals' Association.
Staff, students, families and community members raised over $225,000 to support those in need through the Terry Fox Foundation and United Way Greater Toronto.
Our We Welcome the World Centres welcomed over 7,150 newcomer families to the Peel community. As part of their warm welcome, families were provided counselling and social work services support as needed.
Parent Reaching Out grants were provided to 157 School Councils from the Ministry of Education to support parent involvement at the school level.
In November 2017, the board completed its first workforce census, Count Me In Peel. Based on over 16,000 submissions, the board established 15 recommendations to guide its ongoing work to support staff engagement and workplace equity.
During Education Week, the board recognized 33 Award of Excellence recipients and over a thousand Award of Distinction recipients who made extraordinary, significant contributions to student success at their school/worksite and to public education in Peel.

The Peel board made progress on the We Rise Together Action Plan to Support Black Students:
The board completed year two of its Strategic Action Plan for Indigenous Education, which included important steps towards reconciliation and Indigenous education. We held the first Indigenous Student Conference, and raised the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation flag for the first time at the HJA Brown Education Centre.
The board launched its first Sikh e-module to help staff develop a deeper understanding of the Sikh faith. The work continues to develop other faith based e-modules to launch in the upcoming years as part of the Faith Forward program.
The board issued its Students and Families Living in Poverty Report to understand the impact of poverty on student success and well-being, and to identify and eliminate educational barriers for these students. Moving forward, the eight key poverty performance indicators included in the report will be used to monitor the board's work and progress towards the achievement of its equity goals. This includes equitable access to resources and equitable participation in programs.
The board committed to approach learning through an equity-minded lens by integrating culturally responsive texts to diversify student resources.

The board demonstrated its commitment to safe, inclusive spaces by raising the Pride flag at all Peel schools and work locations during the month of June. It also held its first You Are Not Alone (YANA) conference for middle school Gay Straight Alliances (GSA).
In the 2017-18 school year, the board entered phase two of its Peel Mental Health Strategy with a focus on student mental health and well-being. Below are some of the highlights of the work that continues to support the mental health strategy:
The board launched a campaign in November 2017 to inspire students and staff to prevent and intervene in bullying, #chooseACTION to be the difference, as part of Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week. Watch the video.
The Peel board schools and worksites continue to be proud partners of the Healthy Communities Initiative, in support with the Region of Peel â€“ Public Health and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. Since 2015, the Healthy Communities Initiative has been mobilizing the community to address high diabetes rates in northeast Brampton by creating environments that support healthy choices, and empowering residents to make healthy decisions and lifestyle changes. This vision has been supported by a simple daily prescription for change: 5-2-1-0: five servings of fruits and vegetables, no more than two hours of screen time, one hour of physical activity and zero sugar-sweetened beverages.
The Peel board continues its work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in schools and worksites. In the 2017-18 school year, the board implemented a $13-million capital program, including the installation of energy conservation and efficiency technologies, such as building automation systems, LED lighting, and upgrades to heating and cooling systems. The board's natural gas consumption in 2017-18 was 20 per cent less than in 2014-15, despite an increase in buildings and programming.
The Peel board trustees are responsible for determining policies and maintaining standards of excellence in education for Peel region students. As the outgoing trustees completed their last term in 2017-18, they approved a balanced, operating budget of $1.92 billion for the 2018-19 school year. More than 20 schools celebrated special milestones and anniversaries in 2017-18, including with 15 schools recognizing 50+ years of school history. Students and staff celebrated #ParkholmeTurns60 this year, with a special black light presentation.
Janet McDougald, chair of the Peel board for the last 20 years and trustee for 30 years, was awarded the Dr. Harry Paikin Award of Merit to recognize her lasting impact on public education. The honour is presented annually by the Ontario Public School Boards' Association (OPSBA) to an active or retired public school trustee. McDougald announced during the 2017-18 school year that she would be retiring at the end of her term in December 2018.
