The Hazel McCallion Senior Public School's senior and jazz bands, under the direction of their music teacher, Ms. Barbara Ward, performed at the Nationals MusicFest competition on May 14 at the University of Toronto. Both of the school's senior and jazz band were professionally adjudicated and each ensemble won a Gold Award for their stellar performances.
In addition to the award-winning ensembles, two Hazel McCallion Senior students also received a Gold Award for their musical performances and leadership. Maxwell Hunt, grade 8 student from the school's senior concert band earned Gold Award for his school with his classical performance on the percussion. Grade 8 student, Benjamin Payne, received the Gold Award for his performance on the electric bass.
Hazel McCallion Senior's jazz band has been invited to perform at MusicFest numerous times in the past. In 2016, the school's senior band were awarded Silver for its phenomenal ensemble.
MusicFest is an "Invitation Only" event. Outstanding ensembles are invited by attending and being awarded an invitation from one of the affiliated regional festivals or through a Festival Chairman. It is an annual national event that brings together more than 10,000 of Canada's finest young musicians who perform for recognition as the country's foremost musical ensembles.
