Tony Pontes students are First Book Canada and Raptors 905’s Reading Champions
Tony Pontes Public School is named First Book Canada and Raptors 905's Reading Champions of the Winter Warm Up Reading Challenge on Feb. 27 at the Hershey Centre. Grade 5 students were challenged to read and submit a book review once a week for seven weeks. Tony Pontes students were recognized for demonstrating their literacy skills by providing insightful and creative book reviews.
Raptors 905 invited Tony Pontes students wrap up the Reading Challenge by attending a game, participate in a virtual class visit with Canadian author, Eric Walters and listen to award-winning author, Heather Camlot deliver her keynote on the writing process from developing an idea, conducting research, revising and editing.
At the celebration, the Hershey Centre, together with the City of Mississauga Mayor, Bonnie Crombie, presented students with the Reading Champions banner and books from Nelson Education to add to the school's library.
Twelve Peel schools and over 300 students participated in the Winter Warm Up Reading Challenge.
The reading challenge is sponsored by First Book Canada and offers students the opportunity to interact with Raptors 905 players while improving literacy skills.
