Humberview Secondary School's FIRST Robotics team, 4946 The Alpha Dogs, recently competed at the initial FIRST Robotics District competition of 2017 on March 5 at the Durham College campus.
Teams had six weeks to design, build, program and test 120 pound robots that gather fuel, pick up gears and climb 6 foot ropes. After a modest beginning on Day 1 of the competition, the Alpha Dogs came back very strong on Day 2 and were chosen to create an alliance with Rick Hansen and Central Peel secondary schools' Team 1285 The Big Bang and Team 4939 Allspark 9.
The newly formed Peel Alliance battled through the elimination rounds and were ultimately awarded the Blue Banner as winners of the FIRST Robotics District Event. The Alpha Dogs were honoured to be presented with the "Excellence in Engineering Award," sponsored by Delphi, at the end of the competition.
The atmosphere and excitement rivaled any sporting event through the passion of staff and students as they demonstrated their teamwork, discipline, hard work and dedication as they created and battled their robots.
Humberview Secondary School aims for similar at their next competition at Georgian College on March 24 through 26, followed by a trip to the North Bay competition from April 6 through 8.
