The Peel District School Board is revamping its annual parent conference to offer families more opportunities throughout the year to learn with us. For the 2019-20 school year, the Peel board will host the Engage. Educate. Empower. Speaker Series, co-presented by the Peel Elementary Teachers' Local, on three evenings at locations in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga. The first event will be held on Monday, Nov. 4, 2019 at the HJA Brown Education Centre.
"Whether children are starting kindergarten, middle school or transitioning into high school, this speaker series will support parents' learning needs to help their child/teen at home," says Peter Joshua, director of education. "As our partners in education, we hope they will stay connected to their child's learning throughout their entire school experience."
Each evening will focus on a specific topic with a keynote speaker followed by an expert panel who will take audience questions. We will also invite Peel board departments, groups and community partners to share their information in an exhibitor area.
During the keynote presentation, Jesse Miller, a consultant within education and public safety, will share how social media is an essential part of students' connected lives, and the use of mobile technology to tether a child to real-time information and how content sharing may be a concern for many parents, caregivers and community leaders in schools. Miller will help parents and caregivers talk with children of all ages about social media use and trends, and opening dialogues that promote safe communication spaces that help children navigate digital communications and associated internet use.
