Peel board declares Oct. 3 as Toonie Tuesday to bring hope to those impacted by international natural disasters

The Peel District School Board is encouraging its staff, students and parents to lend a helping hand on Oct. 3 to support children and families affected by recent international natural disasters, including Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma and the earthquakes in Mexico.  All funds raised on Toonie Tuesday at schools and worksites will be donated to the Red Cross International Disaster Relief fund. Online donations will go to the donor’s choice of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, Mexico Earthquake or International Disaster Relief funds.

“With so many devastating natural disasters taking place in the past couple months, it’s important for us—as global citizens—to inspire hope and help those in need,” says Peter Joshua, director of education. “We’re confident these efforts will make a difference in the lives of affected children and their families.”

Staff, students and families can choose to donate at Peel board schools and worksites on Oct. 3, or make an online donation to the Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, Mexico Earthquake or the International Disaster Relief funds at www.peelschools.org/fundraiser.

Donations will help enable the Canadian Red Cross to send specialized aid workers and set up emergency field hospitals anywhere around the world within 24 to 48 hours of an emergency. Donations will also go towards supporting the provision of immediate relief and recovery assistance in the form of food, relief items, shelter and medical aid. More details can be found at www.peelschools.org/fundraiser.

This is a completely voluntary campaign and any contributions are welcome. Donations of $20 or more will be eligible for a tax receipt. Online donations must go through the Canadian Red Cross web portals available at www.peelschools.org/fundraiser— please do not use the "Make a Donation" option in School Cash Online.

The Peel board serves more than 154,000 students in 257 schools across Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga and is the largest employer in Peel Region. For more information about the Peel board, please visit www.peelschools.org.
