The Peel District School Board will host parent information meetings about its French Immersion (FI) and Extended French (EF) programs at each FI/EF school on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. These programs are an option for parents to consider if they have a child who will start grade 1 or grade 7 in September 2017. Visit www.peelschools.org/French to find the FI or EF school in your area.
"We encourage families interested in our optional French programs to attend the information night to learn what the programs are like and determine if it's the right choice for their child," says Poleen Grewal, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services. "Families who attend will have opportunities to meet the principal and some of the teachers from the school, ask questions and talk with some parents whose children are already in the program."
A grade 1 FI enrolment cap is in place. This means that a specific number of spots are available for students entering grade 1 FI. The cap is set at 25 per cent of the total annual enrolment number in grade 1. There is no enrolment cap for EF.
A random selection process system will be used to identify students gaining entrance into the grade 1 FI program. Spots are not assigned on a first come, first served basis. All students who apply by the deadline will be assigned a rank using a computerized random selection process. Once students have been assigned to all available spots, remaining students will be placed, again in rank order, on the school's waitlist.
Students who are currently in a Kindergarten FI program in another publicly-funded school board and apply by the deadline will be placed into the grade 1 FI program.
Students who currently (2016-17) have siblings in the elementary FI program (in grades 5 to 7) and apply by the deadline will be placed into the grade 1 FI program. This means that younger siblings of students who are accepted into grade 1 FI for the 2017-18 school year and who don't currently have siblings in grades 5 to 7 FI will participate in the random selection process in future years.
The application forms for Grade 1 FI and Grade 7 EF for the 2017-18 school year will be available online on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. at www.peelschools.org/French. The deadline to apply is Friday, Jan. 27, 2017 at 4 p.m.
Additional information about the FI/EF application process, FI random selection process system and waitlist is available on the board's website at www.peelschools.org/French. Parents can also visit the website of Canadian Parents for French (Ontario) at http://on.cpf.ca for additional information.
