Program will meet needs of grade 4 to 12 students who require flexible scheduling to train, compete
“Over the years, we’ve heard from families who live in Peel, yet travel to and from Toronto every day so that their children can access flexible school schedules,” says Poleen Grewal, superintendent of curriculum and instruction support services. “Although Peel schools have been informally supporting high-performing student athletes and artists for years, this new program brings these students together so that they can learn with peers who require the same flexible scheduling in the delivery of their education.”
To qualify for the program, high-performing students must be recommended by a coach, agent or instructor who can verify the students’ levels of competitiveness, training hours and schedules. There is no fee to attend the program. “Students will be expected to work towards maintaining provincial academic standards and will be supported in their pursuit of academic achievement, while achieving athletic or arts excellence through their participation on sports teams and arts endeavours outside of school,” notes Grewal.
Students in the Peel Region High Performers Program will have the opportunity to participate in school activities and will be supported as they work towards meeting the expectations of the Ontario curriculum. Students will develop academic skills through online and in class learning. They will be on a modified timetable that reflects each student’s individual training and competition schedules.
