1,300 Peel board parents become students for day at 15th annual parent conference

Free conference provides practical ways parents can help boost student success in numeracy, beyond

More than 1,300 Peel District School Board parents from schools in Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga will become students for a day at the 15th annual parent conference on April 2 at Rick Hansen Secondary School. Jonathan So, a grade 6 teacher at Ray Lawson Public School, will keynote Numeracy and Beyond and help parents understand a balanced approach to mathematics, how teachers teach numeracy skills, and how parents can help children become doers of math. Participants will also choose from more than 60 workshops designed to provide parents with tips and resources to help their children succeed in school.

"We know that a strong home-school connection helps to boost student achievement. One of the areas we consistently hear about from parents is their wish for additional supports to help their children with math homework. To address this, our conference will provide parents with more resources to support their children's numeracy success—with 26 of 51 workshops offered focused on math," says Tony Pontes, director of education. "The conference will also provide resourcing in all other subject areas. Whether children are starting kindergarten, need support developing study skills in middle school or are transitioning into high school, the conference supports parents' learning needs."

All of the workshops are facilitated by Peel board staff. Tip sheets will be provided at each workshop and will be available after the conference on the board's website. Workshops include:

  • Learning to code. Coding to learn.
  • Math in the 21st Century
  • Support math learning in your first language
  • Help your child be successful in French Immersion
  • Help your teen make a successful transition to high school
  • Learning to advocate for your child: understanding the special education journey

During breaks, parents can visit booths set up in the exhibitor area, which includes various local, non-profit organizations and companies showcasing their products and services. Parents will also receive a conference bag with giveaways, enjoy a free lunch and have a chance to win door prizes.

"We're pleased to have received support from conference partner and lunch sponsor Peel Elementary Teachers' Local, and sponsors Friends of the Mississauga Library, Kidssentials, Microsoft Canada, the Peel board's Parent Involvement Committee, and Peel Principals' and Vice-Principals' Association," notes Brian Woodland, director of communications and community relations support services. "It's important to us to continue to make this conference accessible to all Peel board parents."

Rick Hansen is located at 1150 Dream Crest Rd. in Mississauga. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Opening remarks start at 8:30 a.m. Workshops run from 10 to 11 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. General afternoon sessions run from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m. Registration is now closed.
