Sue McMillan, former head of guidance at Clarkson Secondary School, is the 2016 recipient of the Helen Des Roches Starfish Award.
"Sue is a deserving recipient who is not only a professional counsellor, mentor, coach and leader to her students, but also a very caring and compassionate colleague," says Jim Van Buskirk, chief social worker with the Peel District School Board. “Sue has been a transformational guidance counsellor and has helped create a student services department that is a caring, safe, and welcoming place for all students and staff.”
McMillan’s career at Clarkson has been distinguished by her commitment to improving the holistic well-being of all students and staff and her passion for promoting health awareness.
The Helen Des Roches Starfish Award is presented annually to an individual who has made a significant difference in the lives of students facing obstacles to their education. The Peel board social workers nominate individuals who are current employees or affiliates with the board. A committee of three school social workers review the nominations and select the recipient.
