As part of February’s Black History Month celebrations, more than 500 students and staff from the Peel District School Board will gather at the HJA Brown Education Centre on Feb. 10 and 11 for the board’s annual Spotlight on Black Heritage events. Students will attend a keynote address by Brittany Andrew-Amofah of Harmony Movement, and participate in hands-on workshops facilitated by community leaders.
“These events give students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the culture, heritage and achievements of Black Canadians, “ says Tony Pontes, director of education. “While we celebrate Black History Month in February, our schools are committed to recognizing the importance of celebrating all communities and cultures throughout the year.”
Students in grades 7 to 12 will attend the event on Feb. 10 and students in grades 2 to 6 will participate on Feb. 11.
In addition to these central events, Black History Month activities will take place across Peel board schools during the month of February. Fletcher’s Meadow Secondary School in Brampton will hold a motivational leadership presentation led by Sean Mauricette from Laying Important Foundations Together (LIFT) on Feb. 26. Announcements highlighting achievements of Black Canadians will also be delivered throughout the month.
At Edenrose Public School in Mississauga, students will learn about Black Canadians and their contributions in the fields of music, art, sports and government. At the start of each school day in February, Jazz music performed by prominent Black Canadians will be played followed by information about the musicians.
Mayfield Secondary School in Caledon will hold an assembly for all grades on Feb. 12, which will feature music and performances.
The Spotlight on Black Heritage events run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the HJA Brown Education Centre, located at 5650 Hurontario St. in Mississauga. Black Heritage artwork from students will be on display in the atrium. Fletcher’s Meadow is located at 10750 Chinguacousy Rd. in Brampton. Edenrose is located at 1342 Edenrose St. in Mississauga. Mayfield is located at 5000 Mayfield Rd. in Caledon.
