About Community Education


The Community Education Department of the Peel District School Board provides programs and services to Peel's adult and youth community. Current enrolment exceeds 62,000.

 

Youth programs and services

Driver Education - This program is offered to full-time students at secondary schools throughout Peel.

International Languages - Elementary and secondary school students can attend weekend classes to receive instruction in one of 25 different languages.

Peel Summer Academy - This unique program offers a two week live-in camp for intellectually gifted students from grades 4 to 11. It is held during July in three locations: the University of Toronto at Mississauga, Stillwater Resort near Dorset, Ontario, and Memorial University, Newfoundland.

Peel Field Study Centres - The Old Britannia Schoolhouse and the Jack Smythe and G.W. Finlayson Field Centres provide experiential learning opportunities for visiting classes of students each day of the school year.

Computer Camp - This program for youth, ages 9 -18, focuses on animation, multimedia and web development. Classes are held during March break, summer, and on Saturday's throughout the school year at the Centre for Education and Training located in Mississauga and Brampton.

Ontario Secondary School Diploma Credit Programs

Full-time - Adults who wish to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma can enrol in grade 10 to 12 courses which will prepare them for future studies at college or university or for direct entry into the workforce.

Part-time - Evening credit courses are offered at two secondary schools and for adults at the Centre for Education and Training - Mississauga Campus.

Summer School - This program runs through the month of July and enables individuals to obtain new (grade 11 to 12) or makeup (grade 9 through 12) credits.

Global Education Program - Secondary school students can earn a senior credit in the summer in England, France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Costa Rica, or Ecuador. A marine science and scuba program is offered in British Columbia.

International Languages - Credit courses are offered on the weekend for students wanting to study a language other than English or French. Sixteen languages are available for credit.

English as a Second Language Program for Adults

Community Education offers English as a Second Language (ESL) at basic to advanced levels at sites in Mississauga and Brampton. The ESL Program prepares students for secondary and post-secondary studies as well as employment.

Literacy and Academic Upgrading for Adults

Literacy program - This program focuses on strengthening skills in reading and writing, building communication and interpersonal skills, building numeracy and problem solving skills, and enhancing students' growth as learners.

Basic skills training and academic upgrading - These programs focus on strengthening skills in all areas of language, communication and mathematics. The objective of these programs is to prepare students for further secondary school and community college studies or to enhance students' skills for the workplace.
